EDITORS EXPLAIN: Cover Letters!

Do you have preferred wording for the body of cover letters? Like, I tend to do the same ‘ol “I’m submitting X for your review. Thanks for your time” and since I overthink everything I am always like “Omg do I need to spice up my cover letters?”
— Nat, via our
Q&A form

We do not have a preferred wording for the body of email submissions. No need to get fancy if you don’t want. Or, if you like fancy, go for it! As long as you’re following the submissions guidelines, we’re all set to read your work. But here are some especially important submission email guidelines to keep in mind:

  1. Make sure you’re submitting your piece in a brand new email with the title of your article in the subject line! Replying back to an old submission will mess with our submission process, and makes it harder for us to find and read your piece!
  2. Always attach a Word document (or exported Google doc) of your piece to the submission email, AND put the body of your article in the email, too. Without that attached Word doc, we won’t see your work, and that would be sad!
  3. As for the body of the email, we’d love a quick Hi/Hello/My Name Is/etc. If you want to add a few notes about your piece need be, what made you want to submit to us, or a fun fact, that’s fine too! Either way, we’ll be excited to read your piece.

Those are just a few submissions basics! For the full submissions guidelines, visit this link on our site! We especially encourage our first-time submitters to read it in entirety, just so we’re all on the same page!
