A mid-day yoga break can do wonders if you’re not an actual human with anxiety.

Despite the distinct probability that global warming has eradicated snow forever, it’s technically still winter time. That means it’s comforting to act like everything’s normal and busy ourselves by sprucing up our homes and make them more cozy until spring — or until a nuclear winter takes us all! Luckily, the Danish concept of “hygge” — the idea of warmly enjoying a cozy season, and the subject of many a trend piece like this one — is here to help. Make like you’re in Denmark and use these tips to feel warm, but not in a way that reminds us that climate change probably irreversible!

  • Stacks of books: These tomes make for some great eye candy on your shelves! In January I checked out some library books about how to relaxingly knit my own cat sweaters but I’ve just end up re-reading Fahrenheit 451 over and over instead!
  • Candles: Candles are essential to setting the mood for your new calmness-infused abode. Incidentally, they also happen to be an essential component of most disaster preparedness supply kits!
  • A stocked pantry: Keep your cupboards filled with wintery comfort foods, like stews and grains — plus, these will keep well just in case we run into a food shortage. Why wait any longer to finally learn to can your own salsa?
  • A cute aloe plant: Did you know there are more than 40 known uses for aloe? It’s true! Treat minor burns while caring for an attractive addition to your living room window dressing!
  • Internationally inspired decor: I just put up a gorgeous world map on display in my office! Lately I’ve really been getting into familiarizing myself with other cultures. You never know when having a second language in your back pocket could come in handy!
  • Casually cute accessories: I bought a houndstooth-patterned wallet from Etsy last week, and I love it. It’s perfect for storing your passport, alternate forms of ID, and a just-in-case cash supply!
  • Yoga mat: A little lunch time yoga is the perfect cure for battling seasonal depression. I know, because I’ve left mine out untouched since the holidays but my cats look really happy to be stretching on it.
  • Beautiful (and flame retardant!) blankets: I got the softest, warmest blanket as a holiday gift last year and it practically screams “hygge”! I sometimes use it to muffle my own screams!
Could America’s political outlook BE any more screwed?

Combined, these fun additions to your home will brighten your space while also giving you some peace of mind — calm down already, and get to decorating! And the Danish say, our planet is absolutely not about to be engulfed in flames, so stay cozy this winter!
